As a writing tutor at TCU, I worked alongside students (both online and in person) to teach them how to become better writers. I guided students regardless of their writing level, and I absolutely LOVED getting to witness their growth as writers. I incorporate this same style for those looking for tutoring services, which entail the following:
- I change NOTHING in your document. Instead, I comment (online)/teach (in person) and allow YOU to make the changes. This style allows you to have ownership of your paper, and I am a big fan of you taking the credit you deserve!
- I back up my suggestions by explaining what the error is and provide examples of how to correct the problem. For technical issues, I often provide reputable web site links to show you exactly where I am getting my knowledge.
- I am POLITE in my comments. Sharing your writing with a stranger can sometimes be anxiety-provoking, so I treat your writing with care.
- The types of errors I suggest correcting include (but are not limited to), the following:
- Comma usage
- Spacing
- Capitalization
- Passive voice (if desired by client)
- Awkward phrasing (diction)
- Sentence structure (syntax)
- Inconsistent style
- References (APA, MLA, Chicago)
- For documents longer than 5-10ish pages, I comment more heavily on the first half. When I start to notice a trend in an error (e.g., APA requires two spaces after each sentence, so if I notice you only have one space after each sentence in an APA document, then I will only make one comment rather than commenting on every sentence.).
- After an initial submission of a particular document, I only charge one-half the cost to look over it again.
- The number of pages I can tutor per hour depends on the level and style of paper. Typically, I can tutor between five and ten pages in one hour.
- If you are a student, I can only offer you this option (and not the editing or proofreading services). Ethically, I cannot change your papers that count towards your grades. However, I am happy to help you achieve the grades that you want for writing assignments!
